What is an emulator?
In the context of computing an emulator is a program that imitates the actions of one type of computer using a different type of computer. For example, the emulator that I believe is of most interest to users of the Amstrad PCW series of computers (except the PcW16) is JOYCE, the PCW emulation written for use on the PC. This is described elsewhere in this section.
However, there are emulators available for the PC which imitate many other classic computers and systems.
One of these is MYZ80 by Simeon Cran, an Australian. It emulates CP/M on the PC and claims to be able to emulate several versions of CP/M including CPM3 which is the version supplied with the PCW. The original MYZ80 dating back to 1993 is free and can be downloaded from his website but if you want the latest version it can only be obtained directly from Simeon and he will probably charge a nominal sum. To find out more about this read the file "Introducing MYZ80" in this section.
Another emulation which might be of interest is one for the CPC called WINAPE with the logo of a cartoon monkey. Many of us PCW users have had, at some time, one model or another of the Amstrad CPC. Mine was the CPC6128 (Arnold) although I also dabbled with the CPC464. The name WINAPE seems to be derived from the two words WINDOWS and APING, and that's a good description of what the program does. Take a look at the file "Introducing WINAPE" in this section
Neither of these emulators, unlike JOYCE, have a self-install program but are easy enough to install. The simplest way is a short cut on the desktop, or with a bit more effort they can be installed in the Start menu.
